It ain’t about the mermaid

Yes, there are people, White people, who are blazing mad that the Little Mermaid is now Black. They don’t really give a damn about this fictional ass fish person under the sea. We know this. What they do give a damn about though is White Supremacy. They don’t want little Black girls to look out into the world and see new, positive images and representations of themselves.

Why? Because that is empowering. And they do not want little Black girls to be empowered. Only their children are supposed to receive that power. This is America after all.

You know what little empowered Black girls grow up to be? Better, that’s what…Vice POTUS, First Lady, Supreme Court Justice, CEO, media mogul, the most talented teachers, artists, athletes and entertainers in the world. Look and listen to how they dog the Black women who sit in these positions of power today!

It’s not about that damn mermaid at all. They don’t want inspired and empowered Black girls and women in our nation/world. Because once a Black woman or girl steps into her power, she is unstoppable. I don’t care what they say about the damn cartoon. This is about the optics and archetypes of White Supremacy.

They want their supremacy. They want it preserved at all costs. And here we are as Black women having the audacity to threaten it and take it from them. We have some nerve!

So, do me a favor, stop arguing with these fools. Fuck them! Just keep taking from them what they value most, their White Supremacy.

We don’t have to justify why this beautiful fictional character should exist any more than we have to justify why Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, Maya Angelou, or any brilliant Black woman exists, including myself and any other melanated majesty reading this text. We are done with that. We simply beat them at their own game by existing, brilliantly, radiantly and unapologetically, every single day, in every single space, in every single way, including under the sea.
